Chartered in 1934, the Animal Defense League is a non-profit humane society advocating the non-euthanasia of healthy animals and providing shelter and care for dogs and cats. The League is committed to the welfare of animals, enhancing the quality of life for orphaned animals by finding the best possible home for each pet.
Supported by voluntary contributions, the League provides programs and services which strengthen the bond between animals and people. Animal Defense League manages and operates the Paul Jolly Center for Pet Adoptions in Brackenridge Park. Animal Defense League is also an Animal Care Services (ACS) Spay/Neuter Program and Stray Hold Partner.
Established in 2012, San Antonio Pets Alive’s mission is to implement innovative and progressive programs to rescue as many animals as possible off of the daily "euthanasia list" and help owners who are having problems so great that they need to surrender their pet(s) to a shelter.
SAPA operates Building 1 on the ACS 151 Campus. SAPA is a High Volume Pet Placement Partner.
With a generous $1 million donation to the City of San Antonio Animal Care Services, the Petco Corporation and Petco Love have made a solid investment in our community’s animals.
The multi-use pet center at Brackenridge Park serves as a brick-and-mortar example of that generosity with the Paul Jolly Center for Pet Adoptions (named for former long-time Petco Foundation Executive Director, Paul Jolly), Petco Pavilion, and Spay + Neuter Clinic. Petco Love, a non-profit changing lives, is a longtime gracious supporter of the work of ACS.
PetSmart Charities dedicates themselves to finding lifelong, loving homes for all pets by supporting programs and thought leadership that bring people and pets together. They do that right here in San Antonio by engaging in the Alamo City's commitment to building a more humane community.
Over the years Petsmart Charities has invested in our residents (two legs and four!) through lifesaving work--in the shelter, in the adoption kennels, in the field and in our homes.
The mission of the Best Friends Animal Society is to bring about a time when there are no more homeless pets. This is done by demonstrating and promoting exemplary animal care and building community programs and partnerships nationwide.
San Antonio was a specially-selected city to host a Community Cat Program. This 3-year program provided invaluable support in 14 targeted zip codes around San Antonio in sterilizing and returning (known as Trap-Neuter-Return) community cats as well as educating the public.
In April 2015, Best Friends transitioned the Community Cat Program to the City of San Antonio Animal Care Services. Additionally, Best Friends Animal Society is a gracious supporter of various ACS Adoption Events throughout the year.
Since 2011, K9s For Warriors has paired disabled American veterans with highly trained service dogs. K9s For Warriors is dedicated to providing service canines to our nation's Warriors suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, and/or military sexual trauma as a result of military service post-9/11.
As the nation's largest provider of service dogs for disabled American veterans, the Florida non-profit will now operate the Petco Foundation K9 Center on the ACS main campus. Several hundred larger, harder to adopt dogs are expected to work their way through the program annually which will see man's best friend helping our nation's protectors.
The San Antonio Area Foundation is a philanthropic organization that matches donors with causes they are passionate about to better the community. The Talk About It! campaign, a bilingual, multi-channel grassroots effort, aims to make San Antonio a No Kill community by promoting spay/neuter, adoption and responsible pet care.
The program is a collaboration of the City of San Antonio, Alamo Area Partners for Animal Welfare (AAPAW), the San Antonio Area Foundation Consortium of Partners, and animal welfare organizations.
