The director of Arts

Career

Krystal Jones was appointed Director in June of 2022. She leads a team of 23 and oversees:

  • 7 grant programs
  • The City of San Antonio's Public Art Program
  • 2 City-owned galleries
  • The San Antonio Film Commission
  • The Local Music Spotlight program
  • Cultural initiatives including the Poet Laureate and Fiestas Patrias programs

Under her leadership, San Antonio has increased investment in public art and artists. Film permits have also increased by 80%.

Krystal began her career at the City of San Antonio in January 2011. She has served in various roles for the Department, including the role of Film & Music Commissioner. She also worked in marketing roles for Visit San Antonio for five years.

Before public service, Krystal directed award-winning marketing strategies for technology companies.

Personal

Krystal believes that the arts change lives and should be accessible to all. The arts even introduced her to her fiance, Josh Somers. The two enjoy exploring art spaces on their travels. Krystal also enjoys riding her motorcycle and spending time with her dog and cat.
