Poet Laureate
The role of the Poet Laureate originated in England in the 1600s. In 1932 the State of Texas began its Poet Laureate program. The United States Poet Laureate initiative followed suit in 1937. In 2012, San Antonio became the first major Texas city to appoint a Poet Laureate. The Department of Arts & Culture manages the program.
San Antonio's Poets Laureate promote poetry, literacy and the arts through events and public programs. To date, San Antonio's Poets Laureate have participated in over 750 events on local, national and international levels.
