ADUs in Historic Districts

If your property is located within a historic district, then you will need to apply for and receive a Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) prior to permitting. Find out if your property is historic

To receive a COA, you must submit documentation to the City’s Office of Historic Preservation (OHP).

  • Submitted plans must be consistent with the approved designs for historic districts.
  • Plans that are greatly modified or customized may require additional approvals from the Historic and Design Review Commission.

Minimum documentation required includes:

  • Floor plan(s), roof plan and building elevations of each side of the proposed structure (if modified from approved plans).
  • Measured and to-scale site plan. Must show building setbacks, proposed driveways and parking areas, fencing and building footprints.
  • Specifications of proposed windows and exterior doors.
  • Specifications of proposed roofing material, details, color and accessories.
  • Specifications of proposed siding material.
  • Current, color photos of the existing site.
