Friends and family of former Councilman Enrique Barrera, and the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department celebrated the opening of the Enrique M. Barrera Community Center, 5800 Historic Old Highway 90 (formerly 5800 Enrique M Barrera Parkway), on March 7, 2008.
The center was part of a larger project in which the former Levi Strauss & Co. sewing plant was converted into office space for Parks and Recreation Department administrative, recreation, maintenance, warehouse and park police academy. The headquarters opened earlier the same year. The request to name the center for the former councilman came from Councilwoman Delicia Herrera. Barrera was appointed to the City Council in 2000 and later won popular election for two terms, serving until 2005. He was an ordained deacon at San Fernando Cathedral. He also served on the Edgewood Independent School District Board of Trustees from 1978 to 1990.
The 22,000 square foot community center features a wellness component with fitness as its focus. It includes a fitness room with cardio equipment and weights, and an aerobics studio where a variety of fitness classes are offered.
