Victim Advocacy

The Victim Advocacy Office (VAO) is a referral-based victims assistance unit within the San Antonio Police Department. They build partnerships with local service providers to which they refer victims. The resources offered are intended to assist victims of serious or major crimes.

The VAO offers benefits, such as immediate emotional support to victims, assessment of critical needs, and safety planning. They are committed to empowering victims of crime with the goal of preventing further victimization.

Advocacy

The VAO provides advocacy for victims of:

  • Sexual assault.
  • Human trafficking.
  • Aggravated assault.
  • Other violent crimes.

The VAO provides assistance for the following:

  • U-VISA/T-VISA applications.
  • Crime Victim's Compensation applications.
  • Protective Order applications.
  • Basic immediate needs that may include:
    • diapers
    • toiletries
    • blankets
    • vouchers

Family Violence Advocacy

Family violence advocacy is handled by Metro Health Advocates, located with the SAPD Crisis Response Detectives at each substation. The VAO will assist family violence victims if contacted. Learn more about Domestic Violence Resources.
