Tree Care

Growing San Antonio’s Canopy, One Tree at a Time

Caring for trees in our urban forest isn’t just a responsibility—it’s a joy, a journey, and sometimes even a little adventure. Whether you’re a seasoned tree whisperer or just branching out into tree care, we’re here to help you nurture San Antonio’s green canopy.

From the towering elders shading our parks to the saplings you scored at a city tree giveaway, each tree tells a story—and you’re part of it. Here’s how to care for them like the heroes of the urban forest you are!

Caring for Established Trees

A person hugs a tree forming a heart shape with their hands.

Mature trees are the MVPs of San Antonio: they keep us cool, clean our air, and make everything look just a bit more magical. Show them the love they deserve with these easy tips:

Water Wisely
Even the mightiest trees may need a drink once in a while! During dry spells, give them a deep soak once every couple of weeks. Focus on the soil under the widest part of the tree’s canopy (that’s the “dripline” zone). A slow hose trickle or a soaker hose for an hour or two works wonders. Just don’t water right up against the trunk—it’s like giving someone a soggy shoe. Remember: Be sure to follow watering restrictions!
Prune Like a Pro
Trim dead or weak branches to keep your tree healthy and safe. Pruning is like giving your tree a haircut—do it just enough to look good but not so much it’s stressed. Winter is best for big pruning jobs! Not sure what to cut? Hire a certified arborist to help out!
Mulch Magic
Lay a 2–3 inch mulch blanket around the base of your tree to keep roots cool or cozy, hold moisture, and fend off weeds. Leave a little “donut” of space around the trunk, 3-5 inches —trees don’t like wearing mulch scarves.
Be a Tree Detective
Look out for signs of stress, pests, or diseases. Wilting leaves? Strange spots? Woodpecker holes? Your tree might need expert help. Early detection is the key to recovery! Contact a certified arborist if you have any concerns.

Nurturing Young Trees

Young trees are like toddlers—full of potential but needing extra care to grow big and strong. Give your saplings the best start with these simple steps:

Plant It Right
When planting a tree, dig a wide, shallow hole (about 2–3 times the root ball’s width). Place the tree so its root flare (where the trunk meets the roots) is just above ground level—trees like to breathe, too! (Check out our planting guide graphic for extra help.)
Stake for Success
Young trees might need stakes for support in windy areas, but don’t tie them too tight! Use soft ties and remove them after a year to let your tree stand tall on its own and prevent trunk damage from wires.
Water Regularly
Little trees are thirsty! For their first two years, give them about 10–15 gallons of water per week. Use a slow trickle or a bucket with a few nail holes to let water seep into the soil gradually. (See our handy watering graphic for tips!)
Mulch Wisely
Mulch isn’t just for decoration—it’s tree armor! Spread 2–3 inches thick around the base, keeping it off the trunk, to protect roots and lock in moisture.
Shape Them Up
Focus on structural pruning to guide your tree’s growth. Avoid heavy pruning during its early years. Consult a professional if you’re unsure how to properly prune your new green friend.

Why Your Tree Care Matters

Each tree you care for, whether it’s a towering oak or a sprightly sapling, contributes to San Antonio’s vibrant urban forest. Trees clean our air, cool our neighborhoods, and provide habitats for wildlife—not to mention, they’re great for your mood, too!

By investing time in your trees, you’re shaping a greener, healthier city for generations to come. And we’re here to cheer you on every step of the way.
