SAN ANTONIO (January 30, 2025) – The City of San Antonio's Bike Network Plan (BNP) on Thursday received its final approval by City Council. The plan is set to transform bicycling in San Antonio by providing safer, more comfortable bike paths for those who use bicycles for recreation, work, and travel.

"The Bike Network Plan reflects our city's commitment to creating a healthier community by making cycling another reliable and accessible mode of transportation," said City Manager Erik Walsh. "By building safe, comfortable biking infrastructure, we're creating a future in which residents can safely and conveniently travel throughout San Antonio on two wheels."

The BNP was built largely from input from residents, who helped refine a citywide list of existing streets that could support a bike network that links to surrounding destinations as well as the Howard Peak Trail System. The plan recommends the construction of more than 600 miles of new bike infrastructure in the coming years, to be paid for by a variety of funding sources.

Enhancing bicycle, pedestrian, and transit infrastructure is crucial to managing traffic and preventing San Antonio from being classified as severe for ozone levels, according to the Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization

"Some of our residents don't have access to a car and rely on bikes," said Transportation Director Cat Hernandez. "Let's give everyone an opportunity to use a safe, comfortable alternative mode of transportation."

The BNP includes a health impact assessment for residents, funding strategies, and "toolkits" of best practices to share with other agencies and property developers for bike infrastructure designs.
