SAN ANTONIO (February 20, 2025) – After more than a year of advocacy and collaboration with residents, District 1, with the support of District 7, has secured funding to install fencing at Laddie Place, a long-requested improvement for the Jefferson and Maverick Neighborhood Associations. This project aims to enhance public safety and address ongoing concerns from neighbors and SAPD’s West Patrol San Antonio Fear Free Environment (SAFFE) officers about the area. Construction was scheduled to begin on February 17 and be completed by March 14.

“Public safety is a key priority for the District 1 office, with many residents near the Laddie Place drainage basin sharing concerns about the challenges faced due to insufficient fencing around the ditch,” said District 1 Councilmember Dr. Sukh Kaur. “City resources are frequently used for cleanups and abatements and the members of our houseless community who frequented this drainage area were placing themselves in danger if the drainage began to flood. While we continue working on long-term solutions for our unhoused population, we hope this fencing project will create better security and safety in this area."

District 7 Councilmember Marina Alderete Gavito also expressed her commitment to the project, stating, “Public Safety is my top priority and I’m proud to have committed $100,000 to support this project, which addresses a significant community-wide concern. Our SAFFE officers have emphasized that this area is a priority, and it’s gratifying to see construction underway to address this pressing issue. District 7 is glad to support a neighboring district in their efforts to tackle this public safety challenge and create a safer environment for everyone.”

The City’s Public Works Department will oversee the construction of the fencing. The project underscores the City’s ongoing commitment to improving public safety and neighborhood quality of life.
