SAN ANTONIO (September 17, 2024) – Today, the City of San Antonio’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission (MLK Commission), in collaboration with the Department of Arts & Culture, City Council District 2 and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Accessibility Department, announced it has opened its 10th annual Citywide Student Art Contest to encourage youth to create original artwork that is inspired by the 2025 theme of “We are the Dream... It takes All of Us” which was voted on by the community. The deadline for entries is Monday, October 14, 2024 at 10 a.m.

Open to current Bexar County residents, the selected artwork will be used on marketing materials to promote the 2025 March and Commemoration, which will take place on Monday, January 20, 2025. All contest guidelines and instructions can be found at SA.gov/MLK.

"The MLK Student Art Contest is always a highlight of the year for me," shared Councilmember Jalen McKee-Rodriguez. "It's incredible to witness the growing number of young artists sharing their unique perspectives. It’ll be exciting to see the entries for this year's theme, ‘We are the Dream... It takes All of Us’ because it truly does take every one of us to create change in our community, and I’m eager to see the powerful stories their art will tell."

The contest accepts any traditional two-dimensional artistic media including paintings, photography, computer graphics and artwork created with colored pencils, markers and crayons. Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) art and copyrighted people or content will not be considered.

Since 1987, the City of San Antonio has celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with an annual series of events leading up to one of the largest marches in the country. The panel of judges will review entries and determine the winner based on concept, artistic imagery, visual presentation and originality of the piece. Organizers will notify the winning individual and the Commission will make a public announcement at a later date.
