Celebrate Fiestas Patrias and Hispanic Heritage Month 2024

SAN ANTONIO (September 13, 2024) – The City of San Antonio’s Department of Arts & Culture, in collaboration with the San Antonio Diez y Seis de Septiembre Commission, invites all to celebrate Fiestas Patrias San Antonio 2024. Enjoy more than 40 events that honor Mexico’s independence from Spain in 1810 and celebrate San Antonio’s rich history and vibrant connections to Mexico and Latin America as part of Hispanic Heritage Month.

"This is a time to celebrate the many achievements, contributions, and cultural impact of Hispanic communities,” said District 3 Councilmember and liaison to the Diez y Seis de Septiembre Commission Phyllis Viagran. “These annual observances also offer a chance to educate newer generations about the significance of this rich historical and cultural exchange.”

In its 30th year, the Diez y Seis de Septiembre Commission was established in 1994 to develop a collaborative effort to create events in honor of the celebration. San Antonio’s City Council re-established the commission in June 2024, honoring and recognizing its importance. This commission is currently accepting applications for members. 

A sample of 2024 events include: 

• Now to October 17: Newspaper Boys: Ayer y Hoy en San Anto at Centro Cultural Aztlan 
• Now to October 26: Viaje Oníríco – Latino Collection & Resource Center Art Gallery Exhibit at the San Antonio Central Library 
• Now to February 9, 2025: Dining with Rolando Briseño: A 50-Year Retrospective Exhibit at the Centro de Artes Gallery 
• September 13: El Grito Civic Ceremony & Cultural Program hosted by the Consulate General of Mexico in San Antonio at Historic Market Square 
• September 14: Second Saturday Convivio: Stories of the Westside presented by the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center at Rinconcito de Esperanza 
• September 14 and 16: Dieciséis de Septiembre en San Antonio de Bexarpresented by the Avenida Guadalupe Association and broadcast on TVSA Digital Channel 16.1 
• September 14 – 15: 2024 LULAC Diez y Seis Fiestas Patrais at Historic Market Square 
• September 14: 43rd Annual Dieciséis de Septiembre Parade hosted by theAvenida Guadalupe Association starting at the corner of Guadalupe at Brazos Street 
• September 14: Diez y Seis Charreada at the San Antonio Charro Association 
• September 15: Viva Mexico! Folklorico for 16 de Septiembre presented by City of San Antonio’s Parks & Recreation Department at Arneson River Theatre
• September 16 – September 23: TEMPORAL – by Myrna Renaud with URBAN-15 streaming online
• September 20 – 21: Celebrando Tradiciones presented by the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center and Mariachi Azteca de América at the UTSA Buena Vista Theater
• September 21: Nichos y Dichos – MujerArtes Exhibit and Sale hosted by MujerArtes Women’s Clay Cooperative and Esperanza Peace and Justice Center at Rinconcito de Esperanza  
• September 21: Talk-ito de Nopalitos – Plática & Book Signing with Poet Laureate Eddie Vega at the San Antonio Central Library 
• October 12: Diez y Seis Mariachi Festival hosted by LULAC at Arneson River Theatre
• October 19: 7th Annual Fiesta Alegria presented by Avenida Guadalupe Association at Plaza Guadalupe
