City Celebrates Opening of New Robinette Community & Senior Center

Facility is the City’s 12th Comprehensive Senior Center


SAN ANTONIO (November 22, 2024) – Today, the City of San Antonio Department of Human Services (DHS) opened its 12th Comprehensive Senior Center, the Barbara “Robbie” Robinette Community & Senior Center. The center will provide health and wellness activities, along with educational services to residents 60 years of age and over – Monday to Friday throughout the year. The Parks & Recreation Department will offer a variety of programming for all ages at the center, including fine arts, fitness, nature, sports leagues, out of school camps and more, Monday to Saturday.

The Robinette Center is a 2017-2022 Bond Project. DHS will manage the facility operations. The $14.2 million, 17,000-square-foot facility will support older adult services, meeting space and recreational services. Parks & Recreation will offer youth sports leagues year-round, seasonal camps, music and dance classes and the Summer Youth Program. In addition, Parks & Recreation will offer a variety of free programming providing opportunities for exploration, creativity, and growth for all ages including fine art, science, fitness, sports, and teen club. 

“The Robinette Center will provide an opportunity for the development of powerful partnerships between our youth and older adult communities,” Mayor Ron Nirenberg said. “My hope is that this center will serve as a gateway for connecting our older adult and youth community with services that help them stay healthy and engaged.”

Dr. Adriana Rocha Garcia, District 4 City Councilmember, said, “We are very excited to celebrate the opening of the second multi-generational center in San Antonio. My sincere hope is that the Robinette Center will serve as a neighborhood hub for older adults and youth to make friends, pursue hobbies, and maintain their overall wellbeing.”

City Manager Erik Walsh said, “The City of San Antonio is proud of and committed to providing opportunities that empower youth and older adults to lead healthy and active lives. The Robinette Center is the newest addition to our community resources, and we’re excited to open this tremendous facility.”

The single-story facility has a gymnasium, fitness equipment, dining room, warming kitchen, staff offices, classrooms, and parking.

The DHS Senior Services Division will provide an array of activities and programming for adults 60 years and older. Programming includes exercise and dance classes, art, creative writing and technology classes, congregate noontime meal, health screenings and wellness education, and recreational activities (bingo, Lotería, table tennis, billiards, movie screenings, field trips, etc.).

The center will also provide transportation for older adults not able to drive and who live within a 5-mile radius of the senior center.
