SAN ANTONIO (October 31, 2024) – The San Antonio City Council has approved an update to the City’s smoking ordinance aimed at further protecting public health and improving the quality of life for all residents. Metro Health staff reviewed the Municipal Code, Chapter 36, titled “Smoking” and identified sections in the chapter in need of amendments to update the local ordinance to meet modern smoke-free standards. Sections of the Municipal Code need to incorporate Electronic Smoking Devices (ESDs), also known as e-cigarettes or vapes, into the definition of smoking to align with best public health practices.
The revised ordinance, which will take effect on January 1, 2025, prohibits the use of Electronic Smoking Devices (ESDs) in all venues where smoking is currently restricted.
Key updates to the ordinance include:
“This update reflects our commitment as the community health strategist and ensures that policies remain relevant to current circumstances, adapt to technological changes, and mitigate potential risks,” said Dr. Claude A. Jacob, Metro Health Director. “By reducing exposure to secondhand smoke and promoting smoke-free environments, we are taking significant steps to protect the health of our citizens.”
Residents and local businesses are encouraged to learn more about the updates to the smoking ordinance and how to report any violations. For more information about the ordinance, please visit SA.Gov/Health.
