City of San Antonio Shares Arctic Blast Response Update
INFORMATION CURRENT AS OF 4 P.M.
SAN ANTONIO (December 23, 2022) – A cold, arctic airmass has occupied south-central Texas. The cold air combined with northerly winds will continue to result in dangerously wind chills as low as -10 degrees. Portions of south-central Texas will remain below freezing through this afternoon, with another widespread hard freeze tonight through Saturday morning. Winds should decrease tonight through Saturday morning. The Hard Freeze Warning is still in effect until noon Saturday, December 24, 2022.
“I want to thank the City staff who have provided services to our residents during this arctic blast,” said City Manager Erik Walsh. “Please remember, if you need help with any debris, flashing traffic signals, or transportation to a warming center, you can call 311. If you have a life-threatening emergency, please call 911. I also want to wish our residents a safe and healthy holiday with their loved ones. We will continue to provide the critical services they expect throughout the holidays.”
CITY WARMING CENTERS
The City of San Antonio and Bexar County opened seven warming centerseven warming centers. The totals below are as of today, Friday, December 23, 2022 at 9 a.m. The South Side Lions Senior Center will close as a warming center this morning. The four remaining guests at the South Side Lions Senior Center will be transported to another warming center. Normoyle Community Center and Garza Community Center will remain operational through tomorrow afternoon.

LIBRARY CLOSURES
- McCreless Branch Library - Closing at 1 p.m. due to building equipment malfunction.
- Semmes Branch Library - Closing at 2:30 p.m. due to building equipment malfunction.
UNSHELTERED RESOURCES
The City and its non-profit partners including Corazon Ministries, Christian Assistance Ministry, Haven for Hope and Communities Under the Bridge continue to provide unsheltered individuals with warm weather clothing, blankets, transportation, a warm place to stay and meals. Haven for Hope has expanded intake hours and emergency bed capacity. Communities Under the Bridge will be open for meals and shelter through December 25, 2022.
The Homeless Connections Hotline (210-207-1799) is available Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and will remain open until 8 p.m., Friday, December 23, 2022.
311 CALLS
311 received 3,164 calls Thursday, December 22, 2022. 250 calls were between 7 p.m. – 12 a.m. 311’s customer service team coordinated eight calls for transportation with VIA for nine residents to the warming centers.
TRAFFIC SIGNALS
Public Works has reported 11 locations with flashing traffic lights. Crews are currently working to restore them.
