SAN ANTONIO (May 15, 2024) – Hundreds of pets will have full bellies thanks to a free pet food giveaway hosted today at San Antonio Animal Care Services (SAACS). The event was held this morning in partnership with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), Chewy.com and 24 Petwatch.

Before sunrise, SAACS staff and volunteers from the animal welfare group organized dozens of pallets of donated pet food, treats and other animal supplies like kitty litter to hand out to local families. Pet guardians also took advantage of free microchipping services to provide lifetime identification for their companion animals. More than 1,000 pets benefitted from today’s pet food distribution.

The giveaway followed a February event by the group of partners which saw close to 500 families receive free food and supplies for their pets. Today’s volunteer effort was billed as a “Community Animal Welfare Service” (CAWS) day for attendees of the HSUS Animal Expo taking place through this weekend at the Convention Center.

By the numbers:

  • 1,000+ dogs and cats benefitted from the pet food giveaway.
  • 800 San Antonio pet parents received resources for their companion animals.
  • 25 tons of pet food, litter, and treats were given away to benefit local pets.
  • More than 70 pets were microchipped.
  • Four animal welfare partners joined together to help the people and pets of the Alamo City-San Antonio Animal Care Services, the Humane Society of the United States, Chewy.com and 24Petwatch.
