Councilmember Melissa Cabello Havrda Encourages Energy Affordability and Infrastructure Resilience for San Antonio Residents
SAN ANTONIO (November 25, 2024) – San Antonio residents are moving closer to greater energy affordability and more resilient infrastructure. During a special City Council session on November 19, Councilmember Cabello Havrda noted the City’s $46 million in City Payment revenues from off-system sales, and supports the potential for a $26 million reinvestment into CPS Energy’s infrastructure for long-term sustainability and resilience and addressing the needs of the community.
“When I first proposed the 2 percent return policy, the goal was clear: to provide CPS Energy with the resources it needs to strengthen our infrastructure while easing the financial burden on our residents,” the Councilmember stated.
Out of the $46 million, $26 million could be allocated to infrastructure improvements that enhance energy resilience, potentially helping to mitigate future rate increases. “San Antonio residents should never have to choose between paying their rent and keeping the lights on,” said the Councilmember. “This is proactive, people-first governance — ensuring affordability now while preparing for future challenges.”
While there is still work to be done to minimize rate hikes, the November 19 discussion at City Council was a critical step in exploring options to reduce the financial burden on families.
