D10 Councilman votes against approval of reimbursement from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Shelter and Services Program

SAN ANTONIO (May 16, 2024) – Today, Councilman Whyte voted against approving acceptance of reimbursement funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The Federal funds, totaling $21.7 million, will be used to operate the Migrant Resource Center and assist migrants traveling through San Antonio until September 2026.

Several weeks ago, City Council discussed the funding of the MRC. Today, Councilman Whyte echoed the statements he made at the prior meeting. “I’m glad we are a compassionate city,” Councilmember Whyte said. “Most of the people coming through the MRC are good folks. However, I believe we must prioritize our citizens first, and specifically our citizens public safety. Additionally, accepting this money would promote the Federal Government’s failure to properly secure our southern border, and I won’t do that.”
