SAN ANTONIO (December 19, 2024) – District 1 Councilmember Dr. Sukh Kaur is proud to announce the City Council approval of the transformative Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) plan aimed at ensuring equitable access to housing along transit corridors in San Antonio.

This initiative, which has been a year in the making, is the result of more than 100 community engagements, multiple taskforce meetings, and tremendous amounts of community input throughout the process. The plan is designed to eliminate barriers and create housing opportunities for residents of all income levels along transit-oriented lines, addressing accessibility and affordability in San Antonio’s rapidly growing urban environment.

“The vision for TOD, which we passed today, was to create opportunities for the teacher, who is a single parent to have access to reliable transportation for their family to get to work, school, the grocery store, the movie theater, all within the area they live,” said Councilmember Kaur. “As a Council, we approved the framework of a future where having the convenience and amenities of The Pearl, doesn’t have to come at the cost of being able to afford The Pearl.”

“In partnership with our community, city officials, and neighborhood representatives, we worked to identify and address the challenges residents face in accessing affordable housing along transit corridors,” the Councilmember added. “We listened to the voices that came forward and acknowledged those that were absent, ensuring that this plan reflects the needs of all our neighbors.”

The TOD plan emphasizes the importance of equitable development, allowing residents to live closer to transit hubs without being priced out of their communities. By fostering thoughtful urban planning, it aims to reduce commutes, improve access to essential services, and enhance overall quality of life.
