District 4 Councilmember Issues Statement Regarding Potential Water Disconnections at Multi-Family Complexes

SAN ANTONIO (July 19, 2024) – Councilmember Dr. Adriana Rocha Garcia shared a statement regarding potential water disconnections at multi-family complexes across the city:

“The District 4 Council Office met with representatives from Neighborhood and Housing Services Department (NHSD), the City Attorney’s Office (CAO), Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid (TRGLA) and San Antonio Water System (SAWS) to discuss proactive efforts we could take to assist tenants who may be impacted by water disconnections due to landlords’ failure to pay.  The team will develop a preliminary mitigation plan to review with the District 4 Council Office.

“I want to ensure landlords address delinquent accounts so that tenants are not left in a state of crisis caused by water disconnections.  My hope is that we can augment our efforts and outreach strategies. The City of San Antonio and SAWS, with the support of nonprofit partners, can work collaboratively to alleviate the impact on residents from bearing the brunt of these water disconnections caused by irresponsible landlords.

“We must explore options and solutions rather than allow this cycle of preventable crises caused by irresponsible landlords to continue. By coordinating a plan of action, we can work together to mitigate adverse impacts, including the displacement of residents and loss of access to water services.”
