District 6 Councilmember Celebrates Approval of Fiscal Year 2025 Budget: A Commitment to San Antonio's Future

SAN ANTONIO (September 19, 2024) – District 6 Councilmember Melissa Cabello Havrda commends the San Antonio City Council's approval of the Fiscal Year 2025 budget.

“This is a pivotal moment that’s going to push our community forward and tackle the real needs of our residents,” Councilmember Cabello Havrda said. “This budget comes from months of hard work, teamwork, and valuable input from the people we serve. It really shows what we can accomplish when we come together for the future of San Antonio.”

The budget survey and town hall meeting conducted by District 6 revealed that its residents’ top priorities are infrastructure, public safety, and parks. This budget directly addresses these concerns with significant allocations, including:

  • $122 million for street improvements and $21.5 million for sidewalks.
  • Funding for 65 additional police officers as part of a proactive patrol plan emphasizing community safety.
  • 15 new firefighters to enhance emergency response capabilities at our busiest fire stations.
  • $44.2 million dedicated to homeless services, supporting prevention, outreach, sheltering, and the cleanup of 1,300 encampments.
  • A substantial $117.6 million investment in parks for maintenance and improvements, enhancing the quality of life for all residents.

“This budget touches every aspect of our daily lives, from health inspections to streetlights and waste management,” the District 6 Councilmember said. “It stands as a clear demonstration of our commitment to practical, effective governance that directly addresses the needs of our community.”

The budget includes a landmark contract agreement with the San Antonio Professional Firefighters Association, which received 97 percent approval from voting union members. This historic agreement marks the first opportunity for fire union members to vote on a contract since 2009, showcasing strong support within the department.

As we move into the coming year, Councilmember Cabello Havrda expressed her commitment to continuing to prioritize the needs of San Antonio residents.

“This budget marks a significant step in meeting the real needs of our community,” the District 6 Councilmember said. “My deepest thanks go to the staff, my fellow Councilmembers, and the San Antonio community for their hard work and unwavering dedication in making this possible.”
