District 6 Councilmember Commends Expansion of Regional Infrastructure Organization’s Membership

SAN ANTONIO (August 28, 2024) – District 6 Councilmember Melissa Cabello Havrda, who chairs the Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (AAMPO), presided over the meeting in which the organization’s membership was expanded to include the remainder of Kendall County and part of Medina County.

AAMPO coordinates regional transportation planning and funding efforts in the San Antonio metropolitan area, which includes Bexar County and parts of surrounding counties.

“Transportation is key to economic development and access to jobs, education, and health,” the Councilmember said. “AAMPO ensures that funding is allocated for people, goods, and services to move smoothly throughout our region, which is more important than ever as we continue to grow.”

The region’s rapid population growth prompted the addition of Kendall County and a significant portion of Medina County.

Federal regulations require MPO boundaries to cover current urban areas and those expected to become urban in the next 20 years. This expansion comes in response to the population growth recorded in the 2020 Census.

“I appreciate the strength of the regional collaboration that came together to build this consensus,” the Councilmember said. “The expansion will strengthen San Antonio’s role in the MPO region and help us tackle the challenges of this incredible growth.”

The AAMPO board unanimously approved the expansion, which was also endorsed by the Kendall and Medina County Commissioners Courts. Recognizing the area's growth, the expansion includes an additional voting seat for the City of San Antonio and one for Bexar County.
