SAN ANTONIO (September 3, 2024) – As a new academic year begins in our city, the San Antonio Municipal Court encourages parents, guardians, and students to understand the significance of consistent school attendance. In observance of Attendance Awareness Month this September, the Court will support local schools by hosting events that address various attendance issues. This annual campaign emphasizes the crucial role that regular school attendance plays in students' academic success and overall well-being.

Chronic absenteeism, defined as missing 10% or more of the school year, remains a pressing concern affecting millions of students nationwide. Studies have shown that chronically absent students are at a higher risk of falling behind academically, struggling with social and emotional development, and ultimately dropping out of school. Addressing chronic absenteeism is crucial for ensuring that every student has the chance to succeed.

Throughout the year, the Court actively provides truancy prevention and intervention services through its dedicated team of Juvenile Case Managers. This team supports students, families, and school districts with early intervention strategies to address truancy, assist students in overcoming obstacles to regular school attendance, and foster positive change. These strategies include interventions via school-sponsored forums, individualized diversion agreements, and court-ordered mediations, all aimed at addressing the underlying causes of truant conduct.

Starting in September, the Court will host four Senior Summit: Rise to Graduation events this fall. These events are dedicated to supporting high school seniors from participating school districts facing challenges in completing their education. Each Summit will feature interactive workshops, mentorship sessions, inspirational guest speakers, and activities designed to empower seniors with the resources they need to overcome obstacles and successfully graduate.

“Attendance is more than just being present in the classroom—it’s about engagement, connection, and creating a positive school culture where every student feels supported,” said Municipal Court Presiding Judge Carla Obledo. “The Court is committed to working with families, educators, and community partners to ensure our students are present, engaged, and on the path to success.”
