Animal Care Services urges careful consideration when adopting pets as presents
SAN ANTONIO (December 16, 2024) – It’s that time of year when people often think about finding that perfect gift, and some may decide a new pet would be just the thing. While San Antonio Animal Care Services (SAACS) does not actively discourage holiday pet adoptions, the city shelter does strongly encourage residents to make an informed decision when adopting a pet at any time of the year.
Because you’re making a commitment for the lifetime of that new companion animal, the decision should be well thought out and right for you, your family, and the pet. Adoption is always the best option, and there are risks associated with buying a pet from a backyard breeder or an illegal seller, including:
- Lack of veterinary care, including necessary (and required) vaccinations
- Inbreeding and overbreeding which maximizes profits over a pet’s health
- Poor socialization which can lead to reactive or unpredictable behavior
- No documentation or falsified veterinary records
It is against the law for pets to be sold on the side of the road, in parking lots, or other unauthorized spaces. Any breeder who sells directly to the public (in person or online) must have and display all required litter and seller permits in their advertising.
Additionally, local pet stores are required by law to work with local animal organizations instead of large commercial breeding facilities commonly known as puppy mills.
San Antonio’s shelters like SAACS and certified rescues prioritize the health, socialization, and welfare of the animals in their care. Vaccinations and spay/neuter surgery are generally included in the adoption fee and pets adopted from SAACS also include a microchip with a lifetime registration and access to training advice for dogs.
