San Antonio Allocated $3.8 Million as Eligible Candidate for FY 2023 Urban Area Security Initiative Program

SAN ANTONIO (March 1, 2023) — The San Antonio area has been allocated $3.8 million from the FY 2023 Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI). The UASI grant will support the City’s efforts to make our community more safe, prepared, and resilient.

The UASI program is intended to provide financial assistance to address equipment, training, and exercise needs of high-threat, urban areas, and to assist these areas in building and sustaining capabilities to prevent, protect against, mitigate, and respond to public emergencies. In Texas, the Office of the Governor is responsible for coordinating homeland security initiatives and UASI Program Funds.

“We’ve worked hard to ensure that our partners at the Department of Homeland Security have all the data that clearly reflects our major metropolitan region,” said Mayor Ron Nirenberg. “I want to thank Secretary Mayorkas for pledging to combat domestic violent extremism and making it a national priority. We will maximize the use of these funds and will continue working with our partners at the federal level to protect our nation from threats of terrorism both at home and abroad.”

Funding is allocated based on a detailed risk profile of the metropolitan area that considers data related to the size of the population, number of annual visitors, critical infrastructure, proximity to international borders, presence of military personnel and level of cybersecurity. This year’s allocated funds remains consistent with last years for the San Antonio-New Braunfels area.

“Thank you to the San Antonio Fire Department and our partners at the Emergency Operations Center and Fusion Center for preparing the information necessary to be eligible for this grant,” said City Manager Erik Walsh. “Today’s funding will help keep our residents safe by providing the tools and resources necessary to ensure our first responders are prepared for any situation our community may face.”
