San Antonio Mayor Recognized as 2023 Planning Advocate

American Planning Association – Texas Chapter recognizes Mayor as an Urban Planning Champion
SAN ANTONIO (October 10, 2023) — Mayor Ron Nirenberg has been named the 2023 Planning Advocate by the American Planning Association – Texas Chapter (APATX). The City of San Antonio Planning Department nominated the Mayor for his outstanding contributions and support of urban planning initiatives.
“I am grateful for the honor and am a strong believer in the benefits of urban planning as we build and prepare our City for the future,” said Mayor Nirenberg. “San Antonio’s progress is made possible by the professionalism and dedication of the City staff.”
The Planning Advocate Award recognizes an individual, appointed or elected, who has championed and advanced the cause of planning within the public arena. As Mayor of one of the nation’s fastest-growing regions, he has consistently demonstrated his commitment to proactively addressing the challenges facing the city. His leadership has been instrumental for the City’s SA Tomorrow comprehensive planning initiative, fostering inclusive economic development, and environmental stewardship since first elected to the City Council.
Since 2016, the Mayor has been a steadfast advocate for sustainable and equitable urban planning, initially serving as Tri-Chair for the SA Tomorrow initiative. Under his leadership the City of San Antonio has since adopted transformative initiatives including the city’s first SA Tomorrow Comprehensive Plan, SA Climate Ready Action and Adaptation Plan, and the Strategic Housing Implementation Plan. The City also continues to work on Comprehensive Plan implementation through 30 SA Tomorrow Sub-Area Plans.
