Grand Opening Ceremony and River North Block Party on October 26.

SAN ANTONIO (September 30, 2024) – The City of San Antonio and its partners are proud to announce the grand opening of Lower Broadway on Saturday, October 26. To commemorate this much-anticipated milestone, an official celebration and press conference will be held on Saturday, October 26, at 1:30 p.m., followed by a River North Neighborhood Block Party from 2 to 6 p.m. Mayor Ron Nirenberg will preside over the opening ceremony.

“Broadway is back, and it is better than ever,” Mayor Nirenberg said, expressing gratitude to the area’s residents and business owners. “I encourage San Antonians to come enjoy the vibrant River North neighborhood. The construction is complete, and the rebuilt Broadway Street is the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the River North District and urban living.”

The River North Block Party will pay tribute to the revitalization of this key corridor and the vibrant, newly established River North District, complete with bikes, brews and bites. The free and open-to-the-public event will offer something for everyone, featuring live music, a kids’ zone, local vendors, games, face painting, and balloon artists. It’s an opportunity for the community to gather, explore the district, and support the many local businesses that call River North home.

Lower Broadway has been transformed through a $56.9 million 2017 Bond Project and additional partnership funding provided by the Mid-Town TIRZ, SAWS, CPS Energy, AT&T, and SARA. Infrastructure improvements include ADA-compliant wheelchair ramps, lighting and streetscapes, on-street parking, and wider sidewalks. Last year, the updated bike lanes were opened on Avenue B and North Alamo Street and have become some of the most utilized and traversed by cyclists.

The River North District is a 375-acre transit-oriented development envisioned in the adopted River North Master Plan. The district is immediately north of Downtown San Antonio, lining Lower Broadway and connecting to the historic Riverwalk to the south. River North has blossomed into a hub of local culture, featuring a lively and walkable mixed-use urban neighborhood. The area features local cuisine, beer options, and live music. River North has become a hotspot for bicyclists and workout enthusiasts, as well as animal lovers who frequent the district’s many dog-friendly spaces. It’s a place where community and creativity come together, creating new opportunities for residents and businesses.

“This reopening is incredibly significant and we can’t wait for everyone to experience the energy in this new district,” said Hixon Properties President John Beauchamp, whose investment inspired “The Soto” and “Make Ready” developments along Lower Broadway. “Many of these businesses have opened in a very challenging environment, but now is the time for the city to really get to know them and support them. I’m excited to see people stop in, grab a beer, grab a bite to eat, shop local and experience all of it in their new urban backyard.”

The community is invited on October 26 to celebrate the transformation of Lower Broadway and the River North District – a place where San Antonio’s creativity, culture, and community spirit truly come alive.
