SAN ANTONIO (April 20, 2023) — San Antonio and its museum community will be on display to leaders of cultural institutions throughout Texas during the Texas Association of Museums’ (TAM) 2023 Annual Meeting taking place April 23 - 26, 2023. Presented by the City of San Antonio’s Department of Arts & Culture, the conference, titled “Unfinished Collectives: Telling Full Stories”, will focus on support for museums to evolve, be more inclusive, and investigate larger narratives their exhibitions and collections can tell.
Venues showcased through the conference include the Witte Museum, the Alamo, Briscoe Western Art Museum and the San Antonio Botanical Gardens. The TAM 2023 Conference is also happening during San Antonio's annual Fiesta San Antonio celebration, helping to showcase the City's diverse and rich cultural atmosphere to the attendees.
"TAM has strong roots in San Antonio,” said TAM Executive Director Brittany Petrilli. “In fact, nearly 50 years ago, in 1974, TAM convened a special meeting at the Witte Museum where the Texas Association of Museum was created. We could not be more excited to be back at the Witte Museum and in the heart of Texas, surrounded and supported by so many influential museums and institutions that make up the San Antonio arts and culture community. More, we get to be a part of the Fiesta celebration, which highlights the vibrancy of the city and the profound significance of its arts and culture to the local community."
During the conference, the Department of Arts & Culture’s Cultural Events & Exhibits Division will present the session “Telling the Story of the Latino Experience at Centro de Artes Gallery,” highlighting the City’s efforts to highlight Latino art, history, and culture through the City’s exhibits.
“San Antonio’s has a long history of being home to world-class museums that provide access to
arts, culture, history, education, connection, community and more,” said Department of Arts & Culture Executive Director Krystal Jones. “San Antonio’s strong museum community makes us the perfect host city for the Texas Association of Museums Annual Meeting. We welcome conference attendees to San Antonio and are looking forward to the innovative discussions, thought-leadership, and trend analyses that will be shared during the four days.”
TAM is comprised of a network of 1,000+ members of the Texas museum community and offers support by nurturing and training museum leaders, developing and celebrating the field, and voicing the public worth of museums. The conference, the largest gathering of museum professionals in Texas, includes workshops, tours, and interactive sessions crafted for museum administrators, trustees, collections managers, educators, exhibition designers, and external relations staff.
