SAN ANTONIO (December 19, 2024) – The City of San Antonio has reached a significant milestone as the Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) plan received its final approval by City Council. This innovative plan is set to transform how residents live, work, and travel.

"The TOD plan emphasizes growth and sustainability," City Manager Erik Walsh said. "Thank you to the TOD Task Force for working with our neighborhoods and being thoughtful with the smart development of this corridor. This plan promotes walkable neighborhoods and convenient transit access for residents."

The TOD’s success came, in part, from community input, which helped refine existing TOD zoning and support new ones to promote fair development around VIA’s Advanced Rapid Transit (ART) North/South and East/West lines. Those transit lines are now known as the Green Line and Silver Line, respectively.

Research by the Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization suggests that both congestion and air quality are expected to worsen by 2050, despite planned roadway expansions. The City is expected to also gain more than a million residents. To manage traffic and prevent San Antonio from being classified as severe for ozone levels, enhancing transit, bicycle, and pedestrian infrastructure is crucial.

The TOD plan has been developed with extensive public engagement, incorporating feedback from over 100 meetings and engagement efforts. It prioritizes walkability, housing affordability, economic growth, and environmental sustainability.
