Vision Zero SA Offers Halloween Safety Tips to Keep Kids Safe After Dark

SAN ANTONIO (October 30, 2024) – As Halloween night approaches, Vision Zero San Antonio (SA) is committed to ensuring trick-or-treaters stay safe on the streets. With an increase in pedestrian activity, especially young children, Halloween poses a unique “one-night-only” safety risk. Vision Zero SA’s goal is to reach zero traffic-related injuries and fatalities in San Antonio, and with everyone’s participation, Halloween can be a fun and safe experience for all.

Vision Zero SA encourages everyone to follow these top 5 Halloween safety tips:

  1. Be Bright and Visible
Use reflective tape on costumes, bags, and accessories. Equip trick-or-treaters with glow sticks or flashlights to increase visibility for drivers. A well-lit costume is essential, especially for children navigating streets after dark.
  2. Stick to Sidewalks and Crosswalks
When walking between houses, use sidewalks whenever possible and cross streets at marked crosswalks. Children should avoid running across streets or between parked cars.
  3. Walk, Don’t Run
Excitement can make children forget to look both ways before crossing the street. Remind kids to walk, not run, and to stay alert to their surroundings. Adults should hold hands with younger children and guide them safely.
  4. Look Out for Traffic
Remind children that drivers may not see them, especially in dark costumes. Encourage them to make eye contact with drivers before crossing and to wait until cars are at a full stop.
  5. Stay on Well-Lit Streets and in Groups
Avoid areas with limited lighting and encourage group trick-or-treating. More eyes and ears make for safer navigation, so accompany younger trick-or-treaters and designate responsible adults to supervise.

“Safety is the ultimate treat,” says Sean Beauvais, Vision Zero SA Program Manager. “By taking a few simple precautions, we can all help protect our loved ones on Halloween and keep our streets safe.”

All drivers are urged to exercise caution, especially in residential areas, and to be mindful for pedestrians on Halloween night.
